The generally rapturous reception of the new Pope Francis suggests one thing to me: that concern for the poor of the world and the mistrust of power is a force that will soon have to be reckoned with. I sense a vast, world-wide unease with the growing disparity between the wealthy, who still use every weapon at their disposal to hold on to their wealth and power; and those whose humanity they exploit in order to be able to do so. I wish the new Pope the wisdom and compassion of his namesake, along with the vision that is needed to loosen the strictures of centuries of tradition that confine his church. May his compassion for the poor extend to those whom the Catholic church has spurned, and continues stubbornly to spurn, in a world that has far outpaced it.
