THE MIDDLE PATH

Along with I suppose everyone who thinks like me, and believes as I do in justice for the powerless, the impoverished and disadvantaged, I was not only deeply saddened but seriously alarmed at news of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's death last Friday. I was still more disturbed by the reaction of those on the right who leaped without hesitation to seize the opportunity to renege on previous policies and promises in order to ram through a nomination to replace this distinguished jurist before the election--or at the very least, before the inauguration of the next president.

Ginsburg's death has added a new and potentially noxious ingredient to the already toxic brew of the coming election. Before anyone has had the time to mourn the loss of yet another great champion of democracy, the argument is already in full swing as to who will benefit the most, Republicans or Democrats. The intensity of the division between left and right, between "liberal" and "conservative" has only increased--and I use the scare quotes because those words have lost their conventional meaning in the era of the current occupant of the White House and his congressional acolytes. Conservatism, particularly, has been stood on its head; its partisans have abandoned every principle and policy in which they once so loudly proclaimed their faith. And the word "liberal", not only in their lexicon but also in that of the radical left, has become nothing more than a pejorative taunt.

The question that arises in my mind in the midst of our deteriorating national crises is this one: where is the Middle Path, and, even if found, is it possible, even desirable, to still follow it? With the best of intentions, I see no middle ground between my own democratic--and, yes, Democratic--convictions and those of a would-be autocrat's enablers and his adoring hordes. A middle path requires that ground, an agreed-upon set of values, a common ground of reason, a measure of goodwill on either side. Where is the middle path when those who have set standards and made explicit, public promises so readily abandon them in order merely to maintain and reassert their power? Where is the middle path when those on one side of the highway seem to have lost their way; to have no path at all, but zig-zag constantly according to their perceived benefit at any given moment?

I find myself in a state of unhealthful perplexity. I wake early, too worried to fall back asleep. I head off to my meditation at an earlier and earlier hour, and find it harder to resist the thoughts that insist on intruding on the equanimity I seek. I remind myself of that sound, reasonable teaching about hewing to the Middle Path... and am challenged by my inability to find one.

As a Canadian I am disturbed by the circumstances which have developed over the last number of years in the United States. The beacon of freedom in the world has itself lost its way. I can only imagine how you and other concerned American are feeling in these troubled times.

Watching from Australia I too find this alarming, but I'm not at all surprised. In my country the 'Liberals' (the LNP) are actually the conservatives and they are coloured blue! They are 'liberal' only in the sense that they absolve government responsibility to the market so they can get richer. The opposing party is considered the 'left' (they wear red) however they have conceded a lot of ground to business and are much more central and conservative these days.

Like you I am struggling to find peace of mind. From the outside Australia looks like paradise and we are still called the 'lucky country' - but there are some really evil politics being played out here.

I guess what concerns me the most is that 'ethics' aren't part of the conversation in political circles, or in society in general. Where is 'right' behaviour? The conversation has been deliberately hijacked because it suits those who benefit, but it's actually not that complicated. I'm not a Buddhist but I like their idea about 'intention'. When I'm confused about my own choices, or the behaviour of others, I go back to that. I realise that 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions' but I guess this is intention in its purest sense - who benefits, how many benefit, who/what gets hurt/destroyed, what's the big picture?

Unfortunately I see the US descending further into civil chaos. Plato's last stage of democracy is the 'rule of the shouting masses' and I think we are on the precipice now. It's frightening for us in Australia - we are a country with weak military defences, our greatest ally has always been the US and it is being run by a maniac, and we are sandwiched between that power maniac and another one in China. The challenge for all of us now is to find a centre, a sense of calm amid the chaos. I spend most of my non-working time 'managing' our small bush block - delighting in baby ducks on the soak, talking to birds, frogs, trees and kangaroos.

Good to hear from two other, perhaps slightly more sane parts of the world. When I was growing up, alas, you were both "dominions" of my country's King--then Queen. I'm happy that those old systems of empire was finally put to rest, but as you point out, Michelle, the various "democracies" or the communist regimes that replaced them have scarcely done any better. And are now showing serious, if not fatal flaws. We humans are in desperate need of a better, more fully human system to organize ourselves into a cooperative, functioning way of sharing this poor old planet with a semblance of justice and peace. Thank you both for writing.

AS RICH AS WE ARE
We are so poor in this country
I see deeply into the streets of turmoil and the grease that gets us there, then look away
Bruised almost as much as the people.

It flies in the face of reason
yet reason is one of the instigators of fear and desire.
Why do we see through darkened lenses of glass
that take us away from clarity?
We have no time for it.
Lost in time. Nature is not there.
