To my chagrin
my old friend
John Thomas

is often
disinclined
to answer the call,
these days,
when called upon.

It helps little
to attribute
his waning eagerness
to the rapidly
accumulating years.

There's that,
of course.

On the other hand
he will still awaken me
without notice
at often totally
inappropriate moments

and pester me
with his familiar
imperious demand:
Me! Me!
