n terms of quality and size, the Head of the Buddha is one of the great objects in the Museum and is the only one of its kind in the United States. Its downcast eyes, stylized mouth and prominent nose and eyebrows show a sophisticated, highly controlled image. The Buddha's hair is tightly curled: legend has it that when the Buddha, originally a wealthy prince, cut off his hair to take up asceticism, it sprang into curls. Royalty of the time also wore heavy jewelry; this accounts for the extended earlobes, and reminds viewers of the great wealth the Buddha gave up. The protuberance on his head, called an ushnisha, is topped by a flame finial.
