Coyote howls...
He will be heard



I STARTLE

I startle awake
hearing my name called
in the night



COYOTE ASKS

Coyote asks
not why.
Why not,
you ask?
Coyote smiles,
wise, wise.



SLEEPLESS

Sleepless, Coyote paces
back and forth, back
and forth.  What's
on his mind?  A thousand
trivialities, and nothing
of significance.  Tortoise,
meanwhile, watches
with eyes half open
even as he sleeps.
